RGD Talk: Creating A Game Data Pipeline
RGD Talk: Creating A Game Data Pipeline
July 31, 2024 11:00 pm - August 1, 2024 1:00 am
Emily Horton of Oxide Games will be discussing the best/worst practices for creating a production pipeline for game data. This discussion will define what exactly is a data pipeline: how game content such as items, enemies, recipes, buildings, and much more is authored and implemented into a game. The exact shape and function of your game/team's data pipeline will vary drastically; there is no one single solution. However, Emily's time at Oxide has revealed many pitfalls, painpoints, and considerations that even developers who think they are being clever may have missed. Data authoring and data management is a full-time job. Whether you're a dev at a AAA studio who has a crazy huge volume of data to work with, or an indie dev trying to juggle too much, proper planning and consideration of you (and your team's) needs, and the unique needs of your game, will save you countless person-hours and countless headaches. This talk is great for developers of all skill levels! Fresher devs will likely be introduced to a problem space they may not have considered, or be warned of gotchas and problems they might not have thought of. Experienced devs will likely enjoy the insight from another dev at anoher studio, and may find some new ideas or have some discussion with the presenter/audience about best practices and ideas for solving problems. Emily Horton is a game designer at Oxide Games, where she has worked for two years. She started this job in 2022 after graduating RIT's GDD program, and has risen from being an intern to a mid-level designer. In that time she worked exclusively on the upcoming Microsoft 4X title Ara: History Untold, which launches this September. Talks are hosted on our Discord server.
